Sci-Fi shooter sequels are so hot right now

Hotter than an overheated plasma rifle. There are a number of shooters that are all vying for our precious screen time. Some of the big ones currently seem to be following a bit of a trend, they’re all (in broad terms at least) Sci Fi Shooters and they’re all sequels. Prioritising which ones to play and when can be a big decision especially if you have limited time to play.

So if you’re facing the conundrum of which one to give your time to, I’ve done a run down of the best Sci-Fi shooters you can play right now, with pros and cons to boot.

Star Wars Battlefront 2

Battlefront 2 is having a bit of a renaissance, the servers are booming right now. Battlefields trademark carnage all wrapped up in a bow from a galaxy far far away.

There’s tons of content to go at and fun to be had here. The game itself with it being released so long ago is really cheap or “free” on some subscription services. How long the servers stay this busy remains to be seen, but if you have missed out on it in the past this is a great opportunity to experience Battlefront 2 how it is meant to be experienced.

  • + Easy and low cost entry point
  • + Plenty of content
  • + Servers are booming right now
  • + PVP and PVE options
  • – Game is dated (however the graphics are still bloody beautiful)
  • – No guarantee the servers will stay busy

Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2

One of the hit games of last year. Space Marine 2 has a very enjoyable single player campaign, but it also has a great PVP and PVE mode. Packed full of gore and progression, Saber Interactive are constantly adding extra content to beef up the multiplayer offering. Including a new horde mode coming for free next month. You can see a trailer for that on our breakdown of the Warhammer Skulls event.

The announcement of the siege mode has gotten me back on to Space Marine 2 to sharpen my Saw Blade in preparation. You may tactically want to play some of the other options until Siege mode drops but it’s definitely still worth playing right now as the gameplay is peak (video included below).

  • PVP and PVE modes available
  • Cracking gameplay (space marine power fantasies a plenty)
  • Siege mode dropping for free next month
  • – Potential expensive entry fee to buy the game new

Destiny 2

The everlasting Destiny 2, offers up an incredible amount of content to go at either Solo, PVE or PVP. Destiny 2 is now into its 8th year of content, there’s so much on the table it’s actually quite overwhelming, but the community is very friendly and welcoming and will guide you through if you ask nicely. (It’s worth noting the community for all of these games are excellent, funny and friendly)

The gunplay is stellar as you would expect from Bungie, and its latest expansion ”The edge of fate” is due to release on July 15th. Personally, I loved Destiny 1 and I’m a proud owner of the Plat for D1, with D2 I haven’t played it as much as adult life has gotten in the way. I do feel this type of game requires a bit more commitment and free time to get the most out of.

  • + An abundance of content
  • + New expansion coming in July
  • + Solo, PVP, PVE game modes
  • + cheap entry point (can be accessed for free in a lot of places)
  • – Can be costly when buying all the expansions
  • – Can be overwhelming trying to catch up to the high tier players

Helldivers 2

It feels very undemocratic of me to not have listed Helldivers 2 in all 4 of these spots. Especially when Super Earth is currently under siege. Yes if you’re reading this and currently unaware, in Helldivers the players complete missions across planets on a dynamic galaxy map. Pushing enemy forces back across the galaxy away from Super Earth which sits in the centre.

Currently the last bastion of freedom and democracy, Super Earth is in grave danger as it is under siege by an evil alien invasion. Consider this your call to arms!

“Consider this your call to arms!”

The divers need every man woman and child to win this war and save Super Earth. If you take up the call here’s what you can expect.

Amazing military battle sequences on a beautiful bucket list of warzones. Frozen tundras, Vietnam style jungles, Mars style deserts and now the cities of Super Earth (which are very reminiscent of the cities in Halo ODST or Reach). Against enemy factions like the bugs who are heavily inspired by starship troopers. The bots who look heavily inspired by terminator and then the squids who are the new alien faction that has hit Super Earth with a surprise attack.

With the ability to call in air strikes, orbital lazers, sentry turrets, rocket launchers, mg placements, bipedal mechs, you name it and Arrowhead will try and get it in the game.

Since launch they have made a number of additions with a tonne of new weapons and armour. The ability to level up and customise primary weapons with attachments, Mechas and Drivable cars with turrets have also been added which are mega fun.

It all blends together into an incredibly fun and movie esque battle sequences. The combat is dynamic, cinematic and democratic af.

This Super Earth invasion is a live event happening now that you can be a part of and if you heed the call, then one day you can tell your kids or your grandkids that you were there defending Super Earth.

  • + Amazing gameplay
  • + Developers are on point always adding extra content
  • + Live event happening now
  • + Cheap entry point and no extra costs
  • – no PVP

For me right now I’m making the most of my time by playing Helldivers and Battlefront 2. The live event for Helldivers is great to be a part of and who knows when the Battlefront 2 servers will ever be this busy again.

As we hit next month Space Marine 2 will definitely come to the forefront for Siege mode. (And let’s be real Elden ring Nightreign will be out too) So hopefully Super Earth is saved by then.

Let us know which ones you’re playing in the comments!
